More on Barack Obama's Comments

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Those are words spoken by Barack Obama, and they've gotten him into hot water. Both Hillary Clinton and John McCain have pounced on them, and it will likely be a big topic on this morning's Sunday morning political gab-fests. There's nothing really wrong with what he said, at least not for your usual Democrat--it's just that we don't generally hear Presidential candidate speak his mind without reservation.

They generally tippy-toe around gun nuts and religious fanatics. They gently talk around the homophobia, racism, and xenophobia of the isolationists without completely calling them out. Obama even explains his remarks later, saying that in hard times, you come out to vote for what feels good to you (or vote against what feels bad). But he equated religion and guns (what a strange combo, eh?) to racism and xenophobia. People, unfortunately cannot make a distinction between ordinary religion and gun rights activism with the fanatical. And Obama should probably know that.

Still, check it out America. Not only did a Presidential candidate speak his mind, he did it while speaking in full and coherent sentences. He didn't throw in mangled Texas colloquialisms, he didn't substitute sound-alike words, or sound like an eighth grade dropout!

"So I said, well you know, when you're bitter you turn to what you can count on. So people, they vote about guns, or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country."
